This year the Chinese New Year falls on February 18th and according to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2018 is the year of the dog! No wonder I have such high hopes for 2018! Yay for dogs!!! 🙂
Today’s recipe post for German Onion Soup is a recipe re-do from one I shared back in 2013. Since I wanted to update the post, I also decided to update the photos, and the croutons from rye to pretzel roll. The result is every bit as tasty as what I shared back in 2013, and one I know your entire family will enjoy!
This recipe for a Ground Pork Egg Roll Bowl is my take on a deconstructed egg roll. In place of the crispily fried eggroll wrapper, I’ve used chow mein noodles for crunch as a top garnish along with scallions, and chopped peanuts (which are completely optional). The other ingredients I’ve used are basic Chinese staple pantry ingredients. While there may be quite a few ingredients, they’re invaluable to have in your cupboards for cooking Asian cuisine throughout the year. Invest in them once and you’ll be all set for whenever you have a craving for Chinese food, but don’t want to do take-out.
In the open, I called this a dessert. But if truth be told I came up with this recipe idea for Eggnog Pastry Cream Filled Croissants last Christmas and served them for our annual Christmas brunch, not a dessert. However, this year when I made them again, I served them for dessert. Whichever way you decide to serve them is up to you. The important thing is that you do!
I love a good hearty rye bread that has a lot of body and flavor. This rustic onion rye bread with dill ticks all those boxes, and then some. If you’re a novice at making homemade yeast bread, this recipe is a good one to cut your teeth on (no pun intended). LOL
My recipe today for Hearty German Meatballs with Caraway Mushroom Cream Sauce is a “recipe re-do” from one I shared years ago on my blog (January of 2012 to be exact), which I called simply enough German Meatballs in Cream Sauce. This new version uses heavy cream in place of the evaporated milk I used back in 2012, does away with the beer completely and replaces it with beef stock, and I added a bunch of fresh mushrooms and stone ground mustard to pump up the flavor. Wunderbar!!
As you’ll see in the photos and video, I made this Alfredo Ravioli Lasagna in a square-shaped springform pan. The reason I chose this pan is that I’ve had it in my cabinet, and have never (not once) used it. It’s not like I have a lot of unused pots and pans in my kitchen, but due to neglect and a fair bit of inorganization on my part (i.e., getting pushed to the back of the cabinet), my square springform pan was in need of some serious loving.
My family (well, me really) goes crazy for all things German when fall arrives and the leaves start to change. This simple recipe utilizes flavorful German bratwurst which is wrapped in store bought crescent rolls and then baked. The easy sauerkraut dipping sauce the the perfect accompaniment to these tasty little bites.

Since we live in the Midwest, my husband and I are all about sausages. He’s partial to Italian sausage, and I’m partial to bratwurst. I can easily eat a sausage without a bun to keep the carb level low, but he’s all about a bread and meat combo.
