Ingredient information:
STROOPWAFELS - If you're unfamiliar with stroopwafles, they're a traditional Dutch treat of two very thin waffle cookies sandwiching a thin layer of caramel.
The name stroopwafel translates to "syrup waffle."
OREO SUGAR CONES - I was thrilled to find out there are Oreo sugar cones in the marketplace.
At first, I thought I'd have to cover standard sugar cones with melted chocolate to achieve the black hat effect I was after, but with using Oreo sugar cones, these treats became so much neater and quicker than anticipated. YAY!!
MILK CHOCOLATE CHIPS - Melting chocolate on low power and slow (in the microwave) is the way to go. The coconut oil provides the fat in which the chocolate will melt perfectly. Melt the chocolate at 40-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth and creamy.
DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO ADD WATER to thin the chocolate once melted! Doing so will cause the chocolate to seize and harden, making it unusable.
COCONUT OIL - I chose to use coconut oil for the fat needed to melt the chocolate evenly.
Only a tiny amount of coconut oil is needed, and not to worry, it won't add a coconut flavor to the chocolate.
(For additional information, please see below in the swap-out and add-in suggestion category for other fat options that will also work.)
GREEN CANDY MELTS - Are colored chocolate pieces that melt easily without seizing, and without having to add food dyes and colors.
HALLOWEEN THEMED M&M CANDY - I used the M&M colored candy specifically made for Halloween with bright green, orange, and purple candy coatings.
Necessary kitchen tools and equipment:
- baking sheet fitted with a rack
- parchment paper (optional, for easier cleanup)
- mixing bowls
- measuring cups and spoons
- microwave-safe bowl
- whisk
- offset spatula

Swap-out and Add-in suggestions:
- Feel free to use any flavor (or combination of flavors) of stroopwafels as you like. You can find them in the cookie aisle of the grocery store.
- As far as the candy center of the witch hat goes, feel free to get creative. Fill them with nuts, raisins, small cereal pieces, gummy worms, Skittles, or even teddy grahams for a fun treat. You're only limited by your imagination, so have fun with it!
- Not a fan of milk chocolate? Use semi-sweet instead. Not a problem.
- Don't have coconut oil? Use a couple of teaspoons of avocado, canola, or vegetable oil instead.
- Use your favorite color of candy melt candy for the band on the witch's hat. I have green on hand from when I made the Melted Wicked Witch Candy, so I used that.
How many stroopwafle witch hats does this recipe make?
As written this recipe makes 8 candy-filled Witch Hat Candy Cones.

Storing Witch Hat Candy Cones:
Place them on a platter and cover them loosely with plastic wrap. Store them at room temperature for up to 5 days.
Can these chocolate waffle witch hats be frozen?
I don't recommend freezing these Halloween treats because the risk of breaking them is too high due to their tendency to become brittle.
My top tips and "tricks" for recipe success:
Melt the chocolate slowly in the microwave at 50% power, in 30-40 second intervals. Stir the chocolate well between intervals until it is smooth and creamy.
Never use water to thin melted chocolate. Only use coconut oil or one of the alternative oils mentioned above.
Allow the brim of the witch's hat to fully dry before adding the candy-filled sugar cone top.
Additional homemade chocolate and caramel candy for you:
Homemade Pecan Turtle Candy may take a little time to prepare, but trust me when I tell you that this recipe is worth every minute.
A S'mores Stroopwafel Sandwich is a deliciously sweet and chocolaty treat with a creamy, melted marshmallow center. Be still my heart!!
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Caramel Turtle Fudge is a real winner in my book. It's fudgy, chewy, and requires only 15 minutes to make.
