Crumpets With Whipped Orange Honey Butter

Homemade Crumpets Recipe

I’ve wanted to make crumpets ever since I first time I tried them about a year ago.

Crumpets are not something I see in my local grocery store, but when I have the opportunity to shop with my mom at her local (employee-owned) “Woodman’s Foods” (this place is HUGE), I get to see many items I don’t normally see in my own local grocery store. Crumpets are one such example.

If you’ve never had a crumpet, might I suggest to you that they’re like a cross between an English muffin and a pancake.

They’re definitely more “doughy” than a traditional English muffin and they’re cooked on a skillet or flat top (hence the reference to pancakes).

That said they have an English muffin appearance, including all those lovely little nooks and crannies that you’ve come to expect with the whole English muffin experience.

One glaring difference between a properly cooked crumpet and my own homemade crumpets is the color.

Crumpets are traditionally cooked low and slow and aren’t usually allowed to get browned in the process.

My crumpets don’t stand that much on any sort of tradition so I looked the other way as they did their own thing in the pan.

For me, I like a little bit of color on my food and I find it is more appealing to the eyeballs AND the palate.

The English however, like their crumpets a little more, shall we say….pasty looking.

Homemade Crumpets Recipe

When I found out that this week’s #SundaySupper theme was “Breakfast For Dinner”, I simply knew that now was my time to get my crumpet on!

 The recipe for crumpets I used I found through King Arthur Flour. It’s simple, flavorful and foolproof.

The “Whipped Honey Orange Butter” is my own concoction.

It’s simply delicious without being too overpowering and doesn’t take anything away anything from that lovely crumpet flavor.


1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
1 cup lukewarm milk
3 tablespoons melted butter
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (I used King Arthur)
2 1/2 teaspoons yeast
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoon salt

-In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm water, milk, melted butter and yeast. Stir to combine.
-Using a stand mixer and the whisk attachment (or hand mixer) add in the flour, baking powder, and salt.
-Stir to combine all ingredients.
-With the mixer on high speed, beat the dough vigorously for 2-3 minutes (you’re looking for bubbles here).
-Cover the dough with plastic wrap and allow the dough to sit on the counter at room temperature for about an hour. (The dough will expand and become bubbly).
-Using 3 1/2″ silicone ring molds (or well-washed tuna cans), preheat your skillet/flat top grill pan to medium-low (low, if you’re looking for traditional pasty looking crumpets).
-Spoon approximately 1/2 cup of the dough mixture (it will be sticky and stingy) into each ring mold.
-Cook the dough for about 5-6 minutes on the first side and then, remove the ring mold (being careful if using a metal tuna can as it will be very HOT) and flip each crumpet to cook the second side. As I stated, personally, I like mine with a little color…
-Remove the cooked crumpets to an awaiting plate and continue with the remaining batter.


2 sticks softened, butter
1 tablespoon orange zest
2 tablespoons honey (I used organic raw honey but any kind is fine)
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

-In a bowl with a hand mixer (or stand mixer) combine all ingredients.
-Slather on hot crumpets and be transported to a place of complete delight!!!

Ha! I love your painted glass, perfect for this crumpet post. I've never tasted a crumpet let alone tried to make one. Yours turned out great and that whipped honey butter sounds wonderful.
