How can something so simple taste so delicious? That's what you'll be asking yourself after your first bite of this Fig Jam and Prosciutto Crostini appetizer!

Fresh thyme leaves garnishing a platter of fig and goat's cheese crostini.

Nibbles and appetizers are some of my favorite things. You can serve them at parties or as dinner when you need to add some variety to your daily life. My most popular are Crescent-wrapped Bratwurst Bites, Big Mac Sliders, French Onion Crostini, and Beer-Battered Fried Mushrooms.

    Kitchen tools and equipment needed:

    • microwave safe bowls
    • spatula
    • baking sheet
    • parchment paper
    • serrated knife
    • cutting board
    • kitchen timer
    • measuring cups and spoons

Can these crostini appetizers be made in advance?

Yes, but I would caution against making them more than 24 hours in advance so the goat's cheese doesn't dry out and the bread remains crispy.

Store the assembled crostini loosely covered in the refrigerator and allow them to come to room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

What does goat cheese taste like?

Goat cheese has a rich, earthy flavor, which is slightly tart and tangy.

The richness of goat cheese pairs exceptionally well with sweeter ingredients, such as the fig jam and honey in today's recipe, because the flavors balance and complement each other nicely.

What can be used in place of goat's cheese?

If you're not a fan of goat's cheese or just want to change this recipe up and make it differently from time to time, I totally understand. Feel free to use softened cream cheese or Boursin cheese to replace the goat's cheese. They'd both be delicious and lend a slightly different flavor (not so earthy and tart) to the completed crostini.

Can other jams or jelly be used?

You bet. I think any flavor of jam or jelly would be delicious! I chose fig jam because it pairs so well with prosciutto, but feel free to use any store-bought or (homemade) jam, jelly, or marmalade.

From there, you can decide whether to add honey's extra sweetness or omit that ingredient altogether. The choice is yours.

    Save this for later.

How many appetizers does this recipe make?

As written, this recipe makes twelve (3-4 bites each) crostini. However, it's super simple to increase the recipe as needed to make more than 12 appetizers.

What other herbs can be used?

Thyme's earthy, woodsy flavor pairs exceptionally well with many different ingredients. That said, rosemary would be an excellent replacement, as would oregano, sage, tarragon, or parsley. If you love fresh herbs, play around with this recipe.

Can dried herbs be used in place of fresh?

Yes, but (for me) using fresh herbs is preferred because they add a bright, fresh flavor.

Using fresh herbs can also supply a very pretty finishing garnish to the completed dish when it comes time for presentation.

Why cut the baguette on the diagonal?

Because it gives more surface area for applying all the toppings, and crostini looks prettier for presentation when cut diagonally.

A pretty platter filled with Fig Jam and Prosciutto Crostini topped with freshy thyme and pepper.

Is it necessary to toast the bread when making crostini?

I feel it is a necessary step. It will supply the crostini with texture and crunch, and the toasted bread will also give the garlic-infused oil a more structured surface to soak into.

What can be used in place of the prosciutto?

As you noticed while watching my video, I ran out of prosciutto during filming, so I finished the last two crostini with pepperoni slices, which worked well. My husband enjoyed both versions equally.

You can use your favorite thinly sliced deli meat or a combination of meats. Get creative and have fun with this recipe.

What should be served alongside fig jam and prosciutto crostini?

Any fancy or casual beverage is perfect to serve with these delicious crostini.

A sparkling prosecco would be lovely for a special occasion, while a tall, cold beer or glass of wine (red or white) would be fun for a casual gathering or a simple Saturday night at home.

Are goat cheese and fig crostini for fancy or casual occasions?

These delicious fig, prosciutto, and goat's cheese crostini will fit right into any occasion. Just remember to serve them with napkins, as they may be a little sticky due to the delicious fig and honey jam.

When you make today's recipe (and I hope that you will), I'd appreciate it if you'd take the time to come back and give it a star rating along with a comment on why you rated as you did.
