I originally shared this recipe in 2014. I've recently updated this post with additional information, including a recipe card complete with nutritional information, but the recipe itself has remained unchanged.

**Please Note - The printable recipe card with detailed instructions, complete ingredient measurements, and nutritional information for making these Sesame Seed Dinner Rolls is available at the end of this post. Or you can hit the "jump to recipe" button (found above) to be taken directly to the recipe.

Because these Sesame Seed Dinner Rolls are baked in a muffin tin, if you're a person who prefers the crunch of the crust to the tender interior of the crumb, these rolls will have you swooning with delight.

The crunchy crust that surrounds each roll will totally melt your heart...along with your butter! 🙂

    The ingredient list:

    • active dry yeast
    • warm water (105-110 degrees Fahrenheit)
    • granulated sugar
    • warm milk
    • salt
    • sesame oil
    • olive oil
    • all purpose flour
    • toasted sesame seeds
    • olive oil spray

    Kitchen tools and equipment needed:

    • mixing bowls
    • measuring cups and spoons
    • instant read thermometer
    • stand mixer with dough hook (optional)
    • wooden spoon
    • plastic wrap
    • olive oil spray
    • 2 standard muffin tins
    • kitchen timer
    • glass measuring cups
    • gallon freezer bags (optional)

Why this sesame seed yeast roll recipe works:

Trust me when I tell you that these sesame seed dinner rolls are completely easy to make, and they're totally non-threatening as far as yeast recipes go.

Even if you're a novice in the yeast dough department, you will rock this roll recipe! *wink*

What I wrote about this recipe in 2014:

The flavor and texture of these little lovelies are the exact reasons why I love, love, love to bake homemade bread!!!

You won't find rolls this good in any grocery store or even your neighborhood corner bakery (if I may be so bold)!

If I could pack a few of these crispy on the outside, tender on the inside rolls, and send them to you so you could understand how incredibly delicious they are, I would. Sadly, I can't... because we ate them all. LOL!

But luckily for you, you can make them yourself.

How long will it take to make these yeast dinner rolls from start to finish?

A little less than 4 hours, but that includes two hands-off proofing times of 60 minutes each.

The test to see if active dry yeast is still good?

Dissolve dry yeast in warm water along with a bit of sugar or honey, and allow it to sit, undisturbed, for 10 minutes.

If the yeast is still active, the mixture will become foamy. The foam/bubbles are a sign that the yeast is, in fact, still active and will do its job properly to inflate the dough. The yeast feeds off the sweetness and forms carbon dioxide that causes bubbles and foam.

If the yeast/water/sugar mixture does not become foamy after 10 minutes, the yeast is no longer active. It is then time to discard the old yeast and start again with newly purchased yeast.

    Save this for later.

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Can these yeast dinner rolls be frozen after baking?

    Yes.

If you store them well in an airtight freezer bag they can be frozen for up to 3 months.

    Some step-by-step photo instructions:

    • Dissolve the yeast in warm water with a touch of sugar until foamy.
    • Meanwhile, toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet until lightly golden (not shown). Set aside.
    • Add the warm milk, foamy yeast mixture, sugar, and oil to a large mixing bowl.
    • Add 2 cups of all purpose flour and salt. Stir well to combine.
    • Add in the remaining flour and knead until the dough comes away from the sides of the bowl and is smooth, yet still sticky.
    • Knead in the toasted sesame seeds until completely incorporated.
    • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest in a warm, draft-free place until doubled (about 1 hour).
    • Preheat oven to 400-degreed Fahrenheit.
    • Punch the dough down to deflate, and use a spoon sprayed with olive oil spray to divide the dough evenly between 2 standard muffin tins that have also been sprayed with olive oil spray.
    • Sprinkle the tops of the yeast rolls with additional toasted sesame seeds.
    • Cover loosley and allow the dough to rest again in a warm, draft-free place until double in size (approximately 1 hour).
    • Bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until they're golden brown.
    • Cool slightly and serve warm.

    Ingredients

    • 2 packages (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast 4 ½ teaspoons, total
    • ½ cup warm water between 90 and 100 degrees
    • 3 tablespoons sugar plus ⅛ teaspoon sugar
    • 2 cups warm milk between 70-80 degrees
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 6 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • 5 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds plus additional for topping
    Get Recipe Ingredients

    Instructions

    • -In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Add in the ⅛ teaspoon sugar and stir. Set aside for about 5 minutes until the mixture gets foamy.
    • -In the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook (or a large bowl with a wooden spoon), combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, 3 tablespoons sugar, salt, sesame oil, olive oil, and 2 cups of flour. Stir well to combine.
    • -Gradually add in the remaining flour and continue kneading until the dough comes away from the sides of the bowl and forms a smooth and slightly sticky ball.
    • -Knead in the 5 tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds. *Note - you can toast sesame seeds in a small dry skillet over medium/low heat for a few minutes until they turn golden. Keep an eye on them because they can burn quickly.
    • -Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place until double in volume (approximately 1 hour).
    • -Punch the dough down and, using a spoon sprayed with olive oil, spoon the dough equally between 2 muffin tins (24). *Note - The olive oil spray on the spoon will help get the sticky dough off the spoon.
    • -Sprinkle the tops of the rolls with additional sesame seeds.
    • -Place the muffin tins in a warm, draft-free place and allow the rolls to again double in volume (approximately 1 hour).
    • -Preheat oven to 400-degrees Fahrenheit.
    • -Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until they are beautifully golden brown.
    • -Cool on a wire rack and serve warm or at room temperature.
