Once upon a time I received the largest, most detailed order to date in my career as a decorative glass painter.
She shared with me her ideas for the glasses (I’m paraphrasing here): “I’d like to order 8 sets of glasses (1 wine and 1 champagne) for each of my friends.” “They each have their own favorite character and movie so I’d like the glasses to depict a story for each AND the sets need to coordinate!” “We’re taking a trip to Disney and I’d like to be able to surprise them with these special glasses while we’re away on our trip.” “Would you be able to do something like that?”
GULP! Let me read that again. GULP again!
After a few beats of hesitation (and I stuck my eyeballs back into their sockets), a few more email correspondences back with her, the order was placed and I was anxious, nervous and ready to set brush to glass.
Armed with my trusty list that the client sent, I now had a plan as to which person liked which movie and character, their color preferences and a little background about the supporting characters that should be incorporated into each glass.
Sounds easy, right?
Being a mom of two grown sons, we didn’t see many princess movies over the years while they were growing up. Far from it. Thankfully, I was able to dig into the internet to do some much needed research for each character, movie and glass I needed to paint.
Due to the shape of each glass I determined that the wine glasses could have 3 or more characters painted on them and the tall, thin champagne glasses would have two.
First up was the team of Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother (THIS story I knew, LOL):
Next is team Micky (and his group of pals):
I’m sorry for these photos being so random, and that some of the characters aren’t shown in completion. At the time I was painting these, I didn’t know I’d be doing a blog posting so my camera wasn’t always at the ready. Looking back, I sure wish I had more pictures to document some of these glasses. You, on the other hand, are probably counting your lucky stars their aren’t. LOL
Winnie The Pooh and Tigger too:
Princess Jasmine (from Aladdin), and her crew:
Who could leave out Peter Pan:
Beauty And The Beast:
The Little Mermaid:
And last, but certainly not least, who could have a party without
Snow White and her 7 little buddies:
And so the moral of this story is: Your wish is my command! All you have to do is ask (and maybe rub a golden lantern…not)!
These glasses were soon whisked away in their waiting carriage (well, really it’s more like bubble wrap, boxes and a whole lot of shipping foam) to be safely delivered to their waiting recipients. Little did they know what kind of magical surprises awaited them 🙂 I wish I could have been a fly on the wall that day!
