Are You Ready For Some Football?

Recently I came up with the idea to paint a football field on a bunch of ceramic tiles and add them to a tray.
My husband and his family are HUGE Chicago Bears fans so I thought that it was only right that I start with Soldier Field...kind of.  Here's how it all went down (not in real time mind you).

The tray is 19 inches long and 13 inches wide so 6, 6x6 ceramic tiles, fit like a glove inside it.  Each tile gets 2 coats of grass green (make that astro-turf green) paint.

Armed with a trusty ruler, the yardage lines go, on as well as the deeper end zone colors.  Two coats of paint are required for every color in order to get full coverage (sounds like football talk).

Over and over again...
The colors and lines have to run around the sides of the tiles too so everything looks smooth and relatively seamless when all the tiles are placed in the tray.

Thank goodness for the internet because I did an image search to find out exactly what and how the yard numbers were added.  The internet is always such a huge helper! I don't know where I'd be without it.

Working on newspaper I am able to turn the 6 tiles around, all at one time, without any problems (and keep my table clean) in order to paint the other side.

At this point, I'm pretty happy with how this is all turning out and it's definitely recognizable as a football field.

More internet searching to come up with the field design for the Bears (ha, I should know this) and the next step is to paint the iconic "C" in the middle of the field.

By adding more detail and outlining, it's becoming much more like the field I recognize!  I also realize that the end zones I painted earlier were the wrong color.  They need to be a dark navy blue, so two more coats of navy blue paint go onto the end zones.  Much better!

The names, the names...

Two more coats of orange and I'm ready to start the outlining of the letters in white.

In the meantime, I decide to paint some jersey inspired tumblers, with some of my husband's favorite Bears players and their numbers.  What the heck, right?  :)

The tray tiles are now complete and all that is left to do is afix them securley into their alder wood tray and in their correct order.

Ta-Da!  I think we're just about ready for some football. We're just waiting for the players to arrive...

Play ball!!!  We will definitely use this tray and glassware set during football season this year for our cocktails and snacks. Are YOU ready for some football?  Go Bears!!!

Chicago Bears Football Field Serving Tray

This tray design in not limited to football or the Chicago Bears.  Whatever your team, whatever your sport (hockey, basketball, soccer etc), I'd be thrilled to paint you your own tray and/or glasses for whichever team you cheer to victory.  Think college and high school teams too.  You can even be creative with the team names. Why not have the names of your family members on the glasses along with ther birth dates?  Fun, fun, fun!  This set will make a terrific gift and is perfect for entertaining!
