Buns In The Oven!

The snow was coming down hard and fast outside and I needed something warm and yeasty baking in the oven for contrast and comfort.  So I decided to make some homemade burger buns to compliment the nice, thick burgers we we're going to have for dinner.  Soft, fragrant, cheesy and kissed with garlic.  You can top my burger with these buns any day!

Cheese Garlic Bun Recipe

CHEESY GARLIC BUNS     {PRINT THIS RECIPE}

2 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast (1 package)
1/4 cup water
1 cup milk
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup grated Gruyére cheese
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 egg, lightly beaten
sesame seeds for garnish (if desired)

-Combine water and milk and heat until just warm to the touch.
-In a large bowl, combine all ingredients (including water and milk) and knead them together by hand until you've made a soft, smooth dough (approximately 8-10 minutes).  This dough should be soft but not sticky. If sticky, add a bit of additional flour to reach the desired consistency.
-Place dough in a well oiled bowl (turning once to oil the top), cover and allow to double in a warm spot for 1 hour.
-After dough has risen, punch down and divide dough into 10 equal portions.
-Roll each portion into a ball and slightly flatten to make your desired bun shape.
-Place buns on a parchment lined baking sheet.
-Brush tops of buns with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
-Place sheets in a warm, draft free spot and allow them to proof again for approximately 45 minutes. They should be almost doubled in size.
-You are now ready to bake your buns in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes until they nice and golden brown.
-Cool buns completely before slicing and top them however you see fit.

Cheese Garlic Bun Recipe

You don't need to limit these to burgers. They would make awesome sandwich buns for sliced meats or toasted with your favorite cheeses inside and then grilled like a pannini.  Doesn't matter how you choose to top them, just that you do :)  However, this particular night we were all about the burgers!

I hope you enjoy this recipe.  Please don't be shy about leaving your comments and or suggestions.  That wouldn't bother me in the "yeast". LOL.

Until next time,

  2. Looks like a perfect burger bun! So fun to have the cheese inside the bun instead of on the burger.

  3. Garlic and Gruyére cheese! I can't imagine anything better in burger buns. I really love the fact that you add more cheese to the burgers! I'm thinking mini buns for sliders this weekend for the Super Bowl!!

  6. These are wonderful! The cheese, the garlic, the fact that they are home-made. I make one of your bread recipes all the time and it has never failed me. I am definitely going to try making these burger buns too and I hope they turn out as lovely as yours.
